It is very easy to travel by train from Cologne to Paris. High-speed trains operated by Thalys provide a reliable link between the two cities. This is a premium service, aimed first and foremost at the business market, but some good deals are available if you are able to book well in advance and can opt for the more lightly loaded off-peak services.
Normally direct trains run from Cologne to Paris each day. There are a handful of additional connections each day, each requiring a change of train at Brussels Midi, but this option is almost always more expensive than the direct service.
The journey to Paris takes in the territory of three countries: Germany, Belgium and France. As all three countries are committed to the Schengen Agreement, there are no border formalities. You are however advised to take a passport or identity card with you on the journey.
Cologne to Paris

The Thalys trains which run directly from Cologne to Paris normally make four intermediate stops en route. Trains depart from the Hauptbahnhof in Cologne and make a further stop in Germany at Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle). In Belgium they stop at Liège and then twice in Brussels before running non-stop to Paris, where they terminate at the Gare du Nord. The main part of the journey is on high-speed lines through predominantly flat landscapes which include Brabant, Flanders and Picardie.
